What does Sean Penn suggest his intent might be?
Do you agree?
What visual themes did you notice throughout the movie? What might they suggest?
How would you finish the sentence: "Into the Wild" is a film about____________?
Thoreau:
What similarities do you see between Thoreau and Chris McCandless?

ReplyDelete"Into the Wild" is a film about experiencing life to the fullest, without the restrictions of society. It is about acquiring one's own beliefs and values rather than blindly accepting the ones given by parents and general civilization. It is about a journey to spiritual connectivity with the land and others around, revealing a true unity in all. It is about finding joy in the present moment rather than viewing it as a far-off intangibility. It is not about money.

Sean Penn says that his intent is to show this epic journey that McCandless went on.
ReplyDeleteWe agree; he wanted to tell the story because of some kind of connection he felt with the character.
Visual themes we noticed about the movie:
-The largeness of nature versus the people (while people usually feel as if they're way more important than they are, this puts us into perspective)
-Money (he burned it, he turned it down when it was offered, and only worked to make money to buy supplies)
-Water appeared a lot. McCandless is afraid of water. The power of water was shown in a vicious way. It came at points where there was rejuvenation.
'Into the Wild' is a film about finding yourself in ways that aren't monetary or material.
Emily Nizzi, Chelsey Branderhorst, Camille Nelson, Long Nguyen
He wanted to show the landscape as a character. He wanted to show that everything he did was for a reason and had a purpose.
ReplyDeleteWe think that the theme of this movie deals with a right of passage, and how each person has to find themselves through triumph and tragedy.
He showed a lot of landscape and showed Chris somewhat small and insignificant.
Kyle Andersen, Steve Smallwood, Rebecca Smidt, Tyler Main
We said that his intent was to tell Chris' story. He saw this project as a window into a life he once lived and he said that he related to Chris a lot.
ReplyDeleteThe visual themes we saw throughout the movie was that the director played up the vastness of the landscape and focused on making Chris seem small in comparison. Another theme we saw was that when his parents were a seen, the colors were more dull than when it was Chris on his journey.

ReplyDeleteWe discussed many things;
selfishness
opposing perspectives
ideas of landscaping and society
identity
Into the Wild is a film about a man who decides that the way that most people go through life is not the life he wants to live. He wants to have adventure without the weight of government, a job, or anything else that could ruin his ultimate journey. As seen in the scene in the city we can clearly see that the whole idea of a conformed and loud area just makes him realize more that it is not the kind of world he wants to deal with.
